I had an interesting discussion today about one guy in Halifax that says his dog is a service dog. This man and his dog have been banned from multiple stores in the Halifax area. Whether or not this dog is a legitimate service dog, his owners behaviour and the dogs training make it extremely difficult for legitimate service dog teams to navigate public access. Details about this man. Many red flags here. Ive heard about this guy SO many times and Ive seen him around. - Merle Dane - mostly off leash w/ shock collar - intact female (owner wants to breed her) - reportedly trained for epilepsy - dog has many aggressive incidents - plain black vest with no identifying markers - owner wont give training school information or ANY identifying information (I know this is not required, but so many of us handlers are proud of the training our dogs have undergone. If you are open to tell strangers that the dog is for epilepsy, then Im sure you are willing to discuss the training school). - owner gets aggressive when approached. reports of owner getting in face of people when storeowners informed the man that he must leash his dog. Regardless of service dog or not, the dog must be leashed and under control unless performing a specific task as finding help. walking around unleashed is not acceptable. - openly hits his dog - has slapped a childs hand for being near the dog THIS is why so many of us get frustrated when we have legitimately trained service dogs (not just glorified obedience training), have the proper knowledge about how to handle our dog appropriate, and behaving appropriately ourselves!
