I had the 1886 Trapdoor rifle apart the other day for a detailed cleaning and checkup and thought you would like to see. The Springfield Rifle was the US military s first cartridge rifle for general issue, also know as the Trapdoor Springfield, it was chambered for the 45-70 cartridge, which stood for .45 of a inch diameter bullet over 70 grains of blackpowder. There are 2 Springfields in the collection, a 1873 Carbine as carried by the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Little Big Horn and the 1886 Rifle.
