I had the opportunity to speak to some of the old people who were children when the missionaries came after the gold rush... One old lady in Savoonga, named Sadie Seppala had her face tattooed, the only one I ever saw... The missionaries made them stop the tattoos, along with wiping out a lot of their culture. I have a beautiful sealskin game ball she made in my collection of Native Art and artifacts, reminding me of her when I see it. She said most of the others of her age were Gone now. I also met with various current day missionaries over the years I travelled out in the Bush, and have to say my beware radar popped off a few times...
