I had to stop listening to a 2001 (a re-run) radio program in which David Sedaris petulantly explains he has lived in Paris for a couple years but has never set foot in the Louvre. Or Notre Dame. Who wants to just stand there a look at a painting? he asks rhetorically. It is just because people think they have to see it even if they never go to a museum back home, which seems both silly and irrelevant. Or his refusal to ask for a cigarette light because it literally mean you have to ask for fire (feu: Avez-vous par hazard de feu?) which bothers him. OK. .....I think: he is not good enough for Paris, but I admit I have not been enamored of him the way some people are. Granted, his original elf-at-Macys-Christmas-display is a hilarious classic. He admits he has an inferiority defensive attitude which probably is at the heart of his self-defeating attitude, but it is not entertaining to me. (I think both of my sisters just adore him, and have always assumed that I do, too. Every mild correction of the matter has been instantly forgotten over the past twenty years. I am sure to this day they are convinced I am his biggest fan. Typical.)
