I happen to consider myself a Hendrix connoisseur, and yet Im still surprised by his raw genius at times. It is often understated how much Electric Ladyland was his feature record masterpiece (with an obvious hint to Fillmore East as his live, genre-defining psychedelic masterpiece), but I do believe he was going in a new direction, and a very interesting one with First Rays of the New Rising Sun. How I wish we could only imagine what he would have done given just 5 more years of life. At the time he was finally becoming refined at song writing (compared to his more raw 1966 up to Sept. 1968 output), both in the lyrical and multi-instrumental sense. Becoming free of band struggles, and more mature both politically, technically and musically, he was about to finally unleash his full potential in a creative sense. If he defined at least 2 new genres of music per album, I believe he might have outdone himself in this last, 4th album, with at least hints of blending rock, pop (60s definition), funk, and metal (1968 definition) for the first time. On the flip side of the coin, Im glad he died before his 6th album. We all know rock musicians all become shit by their 5th album ;) https://youtube/watch?v=qvd54w0vGJg
