I hate hearing that kids suffer the most during the strike. Its false. Totally NOT TRUE. I have two kids. One was thrilled to miss exams. One was sad to lose his trip to the water slides. Of my students, one who skipped a lot for the last two weeks and slipped under 50% lost his chance to come in and make up work to pull a pass. Most kids and parents were inconvenienced. A few had real difficulties. None of it compares with the pain and stress and misery my colleagues are and have been going through. The strike has hurt us a LOT!! We HATE sitting by and not being able to help out our students. There have been so many tears and anguished hearts, financially stressed out, eyes dark from lack of sleep... Most of my friend are fighting being broken and beaten down. Then : Why are we doing it? BECAUSE THE PAIN OF WATCHING THE WHOLE SYSTEM GO DOWN THE DRAIN FOR YEARS IS EVEN WORSE!!!! Its like that thing where a paper cut is nothing if you are facing an amputation. The disruption and chaos of the strike is a paper cut when measured against the long term damage to students and society of underfunding education. Demoralizing and devaluing teachers and SEAs and other support staff will only lead to far more devastating results than closing schools for a few weeks ever could. If this is the only way we can draw attention to the unmet needs of our neglected students, we will bite down on the pain of our personal losses and soldier on.
