I have a new deep respect for mothers today and what they go - TopicsExpress

I have a new deep respect for mothers today and what they go through to bring life into the world. The experience verged on overpowering at times. Mary was a champ and labored for days with 17 hours of intense, active labor. After the last few hours of hard labor, it was found that she quit progressing at 8 cm. Her contractions were extremely powerful. Marys mom, Laurie Keneipp and I were her cheerleaders, taking turns helping her get through the contractions. Alissa and Cora from New Dawn Midwifery (Asheville) provided our skilled support. When it was found that MJ had quit progressing, Alissa suggested that we transport to Mission and that she get an epidural. Though we had been staunch believers in natural birth up to that point, we were all extremely exhausted (especially Mary Jane, of course--she was doing all of the work!) and decided that it was a good idea. After we got to the hospital, Mary was having extremely powerful contractions. Thankfully, the epidural took the intense pain away and MJ was able to rest some. Alissa and our hospital nurse, Pam, did a great job of helping her get ready to push. Mary pushed for over an hour and August was born at 2:25 this morning. I cant speaking highly enough of the great work Alissa did and of our wonderful, competent staff in the Mission Hospital Labor and Delivery center. Looking in Augusts little face this morning was the kind of experience that simply cant be described. i a very thankful for all of the support and love that has come our way throughout this pregnancy and over the last few days. Much love and gratitude from the Caraways.
