I have a person that owes me over $10,000 for a project that I did under contract. Hes a millionaire in Hollywood. He says that he isnt going to pay me because instead of selling the book, they are donating it now. I wonder what he would do if I forward all of my bills to his house haha. This is a perfect example of someone taking advantage of an artist. He knows I cant afford a lawyer at the moment so he is going with it. I will focus on my own priorities and when the time is right, I will get paid for my work through the legal system. He did this to me while I was going through my divorce and dumping all of my money into lawyers. I share this info because I want people to see what artists go through sometimes. But, I am not complaining, nor am I sad about this. I understand that is it part of the package of being an artist. I still love and trust people, but, its important to me that people know that even successful artists struggle and get mistreated and manipulated. The smart thing to do is to not let it wear you down and not to let it make us bitter or live unhappy lives. Us artists are often run by our emotions and we see a lot of created people defeated when encountering these situations. I guess I will call that, survival of the fittest. Being an artist is like the last man standing. Ive been standing for about 10 years, and I wont let people with poor character interfere with my happiness. Ive taken some punches in the last 2 years and I still smile, and play, and act goofy all day long with my kids. I wish I could do more for them financially but, we are happy and live a pretty good life so I would be comfortable calling that success. Love, Dirk Strangely
