I have an old jw lady acquaintance who turned 97 years old this week. She has been around my life since I became a jw in the 70s. She is one of those sisters that was always in field service, rain, snow, cold, and hot, many times working all by herself. She was born in the same year Judge Rutherford was made President of the Watchtower, 1917. She was a Born in the JW organization, and was baptized and started pioneering at 18 years of age. What impelled her to get baptized, start pioneering, remain single all her life were the series of public lectures titled “THE WORLD HAS ENDED-MILLIONS NOW LIVING WILL NEVER DIE’ I’ve known her for quite a while, and that is a subject she always brings up. It’s like it has been imprinted in her brain very deep. Keep in mind that she was between the age of 1-8 when these lectures were being given. So JW rhetoric does make lasting impressions on children. It is dangerous to allow kids to go with jw relatives to the Kingdom Hall if it is within your power to prevent it. But this person is a nice lady and I feel for her so much. I’ve seen her live a very simple life. I’ve seen her cleaning house at 80 years of age just to make ends meet. I have never seen her wear a brand new dress or new shoes but always hand downs by other witnesses. I have seen her looking at small children play in the Kingdom Hall and I know she wishes she had at least one child of her own. She told me stories about a few brothers who wanted to marry her but she was discouraged from marrying so close to the end of the system of things. I always hug her and have small talk with her. Every time I see her she always kisses me on the cheek before she leaves and tells me, “The end is just around the corner, don’t give up” This time it was different. The last time I had seen her I hadn’t waken up to TTAT. My eyes started watering because I knew she had given up everything, kids, grandkids, marriage, for the Watchtower that lied to her and sucked all of the life out of her. I hugged her and mustered all my strength not to cry. Her granddaughter-jwsis went ahead and led her off. She is so sickly I don’t think I will see her again.
