I have become a good bit contemptuous of Jonathon Cahn and his books the Harbinger and most frequently his The Mystery of the Shemitah. I have become even more contemptuous toward many of his readers who claim a special knowledge as a result of Cahns works of fiction (Yes they are Fiction, that fact is plastered very clearly on the bottom right hand corner of his books!). Fiction is, well, fiction. Its not real. I understand it is “historical fiction”- but it is fiction still. Cahns books are NOT evidence of what is going to happen – or even what HAS happened, it is evidence only of how Cahn has interpreted what has happened and how he has written about how things have been. And it is a mistake to occlude that distinction. Its true that Cahn has done considerable research on his subjects, but its also true that Cahn manipulates the desire of his readers to be “in the know,” “to be in on a good secret” to believe and even evengelize his compelling milieu of facts, mixed with fiction that has nothing to do with reality. I think Cahn wants to proselytize for a cause--and I am not convinced it is anything more than to make his mediocre historical fiction into best sellers. I think I will write a book. I am thinking of picking a Bible verse out of the air, writing a book, and marketing a secret. I think I Kings 2:24 will do nicely! How about this for a title: “The Curse of the Shebear!” It is a compelling fiction (but it is real!) about the secret curse balding old men like me can use to make people be nice to us! It is 8:45 am on a Saturday Morning, and I am feeling grumpy.
