I have been a reader since as far back as I can remember. I taught myself to read at about age five using the books and the Sunday funnies that my mama or my daddy or occasionally a grandparent would read to me. I had an excellent memory (now sadly diminished) and was able to learn sight reading fairly quickly. This has been the biggest blessing of my life and I dont take reading or being able to read and comprehend lightly. Its important to everything else. You cant learn if you cant read. So in my opinion the single biggest thing you can do for your child is to instill in him or her a love for books. Early on in my life I developed a real passion for Agatha Christies mystery novels. It wasnt just the murder mystery, although I have always noticed that the bumped-off person was usually someone who wasnt going to be missed to much- it was the sense of place. My favorites are the ones she wrote just after the War, when Europe was still reeling and trying to recover and rebuild. Her characters were so foreign to me but I felt I knew them personally, so finely did she put their personalities in focus. And the descriptions of London and the English countryside still thrill me even though I have probably read each book a hundred times. Manor houses, country estates, seaside cottages- I can picture them all in my head. And servants, people! Parlor maids, butlers, housekeepers, cooks, scullery girls, footmen- what a grand rich life! Anyway, I still read at least one of these novels a week along with whatever else I happen to be reading currently. They are like my best friends. They are my secret fantasy life and in all honesty there have been times when I have escaped to them when I wanted to avoid real life. Theres something comforting about always knowing whodunit.
