I have been an advocate and rallied for equality and civil rights all my life. I tried to use my work and my voice as a tool and not a weapon. I stood with anyone who wished to illuminate injustice and makes right what is wrong with the world. I wish no one harm and I defend our right to protest and freedom of speech. I recognize that, in spite of the mandate that all men remain equal under the law , that all men are really not equal. As long as every one of is regarded as any one of us, we must continue to make it right. There is still a lot of work to do....but How does burning down your own town help anyone? How does indiscriminate rage and hatred bring about nondiscrimination? How does breaking into your neighbors stores and stealing from hard earned businesses in your own community help anyone? This isnt protest, this is crime. This is theft. This isnt about bad cops or Michael Brown, this is about you. Looting is about greed not justice. Its clear, we need to make right what is wrong with America. If you really want to fight injustice, dont be part of the problem. Hurting someone else will not stop you from hurting. I recognize that we need serious, compassionate review and reform and our history in the civil rights movement proves that together we can do this. In the words of the wise and beloved Dr. King, by peaceful protest, we will overcome. . But if you really want equality, begin by treating others equally, if you want to right the wrong, begin by doing the right thing, it the right way. Since when has violence stopped violence? Since when has destroying peace created peace? More Injustice will not bring justice. I still stand for every one of us but, this morning Im weary of the fight and...for now Ferguson has stunned me into silence. -Merrit Malloy
