WATCHING MY WORDS Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch - TopicsExpress

WATCHING MY WORDS Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. (Psalm 141:3 NIV) What a prayer! None among us have a perfect record with the words of our mouth. We either say nothing when we should, say something when we shouldnt and occasionally say the right thing! The tongue, though small, can form words that can maul. The tongue can be sharp like a serpents and rough like a cats. It can be smooth like cream but cut like a sword. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:21 NIV) Sometimes my friend and I jokingly say, Do you have any gossip? I need to know what to pray about. Though said in jest, its the tongue that carry words to our ears, words of life or death. The tongue is the outlet for the heart. Jesus said, Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34 NKJV) James says, But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. (James 3:8 NKJV) All of which brings us back to Davids prayer: Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Our daily morning prayer should be that God guard our mouth this day. May the Holy Spirit check us when we are about to speak unwisely and shut us up. Also to tell us when to insert a good word. Words are full of power. James emphasizes that no man can tame the tongue, only God can do that. The cure is the heart, for out of the abundance of what is in our inner being flows a stream of purity or impurity. This river of a tongue must have a source. Do not expect sweet water to flow from a polluted well. A word Ill spoken can be redeemed by apology, thus David, a good man, prayed for help. A word spoken in evil is damning to the speaker and damaging to the recipient. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips (Psalms 141:3 KJV) May this be a day of purity flowing from a sweet well. Selah
