I have been asked to comment on a public call for Mattel to produce a Barbie doll with no hair and for the proceeds to go to cancer research. I would like to state that I am not a Barbie proponent to begin with. For too many years, the Barbie doll line has added to the already unrealistic physical expectations that are placed on women. How many young girls were left feeling physically inadequate due to the insanely exaggerated proportions that have always been a staple of the franchise? We can not even begin to understand the full extent of emotional damage that has been inflicted by Barbie over the years. It is my opinion that Mattels slogan should be Making women and girls feel less than feminine since 1959. I care not what Barbie does or doesnt do and there are no hospitals or laboratories that will be curing cancer any time soon. If the powers that be wanted cancer to be cured, it would be cured. When the ability of pharmaceutical companies to make extreme profits through the treatment of cancer is removed, then cancer will be cured. I watched my sister suffer from the ravages of cancer and its treatment for over a year until her passing. I experienced my familys misery. I saw the cost of treatment. There is no way that the pharmaceutical industry will relinquish such profits to an unprofitable cure, not without a fight.
