I have been studying July 2nd in more detail, and I am wondering if the way the Union fed their troops into the fray, an artifact of their position, isnt a major reason why Lees en echelon attack failed. One of the major components of this type of attack, is that it opens up a gap and the men being attacked at that gap see it coming and run. The land shape at Gettysburg generally stopped this from happening. When you moved into the VoD you didnt see the Wheatfield. When you moved into the Wheatfield, you didnt see the VoD or Cemetery Ridge. With the exception of the 1 MN, no one on the Union side, including the division moving against Wilcox on Cemetery Ridge ever felt the feeling of despair that the attack was meant to engender. Other than little bits and pieces on this, I havent read much. Any authors that explore this more rigorously?
