I have come to decision: from hereon in, I shall no longer use the terms anime and manga while describing the medium. It mostly boiled down to a simple question: jus why DO we desperate them from other forms of animation? One could say its because we use it to describe animation from japan, but why do we not do the same for the likes of The Secret of Kells, a foreign animation based on Celtic Faith and myth? No, we call these and films of similar moniker foreign animation, but when describing, say, One Piece Strong World-another foreign film-it is instead called an anime film. It cant just be animation in Asia either-Dexters Laboratory had many parts of it done in Korea yet is still called a cartoon, yet Afro Samurai had most of its work done in America first-even debuting here, iirc- yet is called an anime. One could say because it was based on a manga, yet consider this: Witchblade was based on an american comic book series...yet is still labeled an anime. The most common reason is that its to split zany, nonsensical cartons from mature, sophisticated anime, but do barriers like that truly exist anymore? Modern Pixar, DreamWorks and even some Disney works have a flair of sophistication to them. Adventure Time is silly yes, but just like One Price when you dig down you find a reach, deep and sometimes tragic world to immerse in. And can you really say things like Tom Hanks Electric City is less sophisticated then ...like, most Gainax series? This barrier I feel is non existing and should vanjsh-much like how terms such as Negro and midget are frowned on do to being disrespectful, I feel the same about anime and many a, and shall call them what they really are: graphic novels. comics. Foreign films. Animations. Cartoons. In japan, everything is anime, so why cant everything be cartoons here? With stuff like Avatar, Ultimo, and Bee & Puppycat, terms as such should no longer exist.
