I have heard rumors that there are still parents conducting chicken pox parties here in our community. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. Do NOT participate in this dangerous event. Yes, the majority of cases of chicken pox are manageable without lasting effects. However, I (and every other pediatrician) have cared for the cases that went bad. These bad cases typically occurred in kids with immune disorders for one reason or another, but not always. For me, a low number of cases with complications wouldnt mean a thing if my child was included in that number. There is a very safe and very effective vaccine available. I, myself, have used this vaccine in my own children. I imagine that many of the parents choosing to expose their children to chickenpox never had the illness themselves. As a child, I can vividly remember the fevers, the itching and the isolation. It was a miserable time and one I would never choose to subject my children or any child to. I simply can not understand this trend. PLEASE, take my words to heart. If you have questions about varicella (chickenpox) or you have friends that do, please ask. Do NOT play Russian roulette with your childs health. -Dr. Melanie
