I have high regard for this film, scripted by Hanif Kureishi, which I saw in the New York Film Festival last year. It may be the best take on aging baby boomers Ive seen. The infamous protest decade that lies in the couples past is evoked in a number of ways, including a repetition of the Madison dance in Godards Bande a Part where Anna Karina and her two companions show themselves that they can be cool. Of course history returns as melancholy farce, and being on vacation in Paris, the city anglo-saxons most love and always seem to wish it had been hit by a neutron bomb so that they could have the Louvre and the Eiffel without the snotty Parisians. Indeed, I dont recall if any French people were harmed or charmed; the couple is but the romances of the mature are always melancholy. But it is the melancholy of a good cognac. Ill write a more knowing review maybe when I see it again. Kureishi is of course an interesting screenwriter, and has been since he began with Stephen Frearss My Beautiful Laundrette. I also recently saw Patrice Chereaus Intimacy; check this out for a rather different view of romance. musicboxfilms/le-week-end-movies-85.php
