I have just started reading Sterling Haydens autobiography the Wanderer. He is like Hemingway on crack (his life, not his writing)... I love him!!! He skippered a trading schooner in the Caribbean after earning his masters license, he was awarded his first command aged 22. He joined the Marines as a private an while at Parris Island he was recommended for Officer Candidate School. After graduation he was transferred to service as an undercover agent with the OSS. His World War II service included sailing with supplies from Italy to Yugoslav partisans and parachuting into fascist Croatia. He received the Silver Star and a commendation from Yugoslavias Marshal Tito. He left active duty 1945 as a captain. His great admiration for the bravery of the Communist partisans led to a brief membership in the Communist Party. Haydens wild, they said. Hes kind of nuts‑but youve got to hand it to him. He doesnt give a damn about the loot or the stardom or things like that—something to do with his seafaring, or maybe what he went through in the war . . . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_Hayden
