I have never been able to arrive at any other conviction but that tools and words emerged together. A sound or gesture is an instrument as well as a state, say, of some emotional reaction. A simple tool becomes complex, a simple word or chunk becomes a complex thing like a clausal structure, and they are both design behavior. When we enter complex design, complex instruments, complex communication exchanges, we can engage in complex social behavior and become human. This shift must have had some surprising emergent qualities.
