I have no doubt that one day the chronic shoeing of children will be seen for the barbaric practice that it is. Sadly, it seems that day is a long way off. Until then, well have to watch generations of kids grow up unnecessarily handicapped, victims of popular ignorance. On the bright side, a few of those kids will discover how to use their feet properly and reap the benefits. The rehabilitation of my own feet has been such an amazing and rewarding journey. They may never fully recover from many formative years of abuse and neglect, but my feet now have never been stronger and healthier. Learning how theyre supposed to work and opening up to a new sense has been truly transformational. Unfortunately, most will never think or dare to buck the trend, but the body is incredibly resilient and adaptable. Theyll bumble along despite their undermined feet, hopefully finding their way to regular activity and a mostly healthy life. Most will enjoy many years before their neglect catches up with them in any serious way. Theyll miss out. Theyll be weak, unbalanced, and sore. But theyll be mostly OK, I tell myself. Still, I die a little inside every time I see tiny shoes.
