I have no lawn and treasure the remaining grassy lanes. They are turf so delightful one is safe to slip off shoes and walk barefoot. Diversity is a feature of the complex clovers, blue grass, fescue, and old fashioned URI #2. (found growing wild in a pasture on Jamestown). Chamomile, jonny jump ups, violets and poppies inhabit the border line between beds and grassy lane until this year when I completed cobblestone borders. Its ok, I will not weed out the volunteers. They remind me of the story of Ruth and in that spirit, remain. Before the snowstorm and while the turf is mostly dormant, Im spreading limestone, green sand and reseeding with a general landscapers grass seed mix. To cap it all off, Im sprinkling a thin layer of peat moss over all the grassy lanes. I cover the lanes at each equinox with enough compost and this time with peat moss. Beyond these elementary aspects of turf care, I simply mow high. Taller grass is a formidable opponent to crabgrass, my arch nemissis. Try not to disturb the soil in your turf which stimulates weed seed germination. Its difficult with skunks, squirrels and sometimes robin, who burrow, scratch and dig. The peat moss will absorb huge amounts of water and quickly become part of the turf. If not so expensive, Id use it more often.
