I have no problem acknowledging the default, almost subconscious - TopicsExpress

I have no problem acknowledging the default, almost subconscious racism that pervaded most of western culture... and for that matter most of ALL cultures... up until recently at best, and in greater or lesser part, still today. What I have a problem with, is the fact that people in America have no perspective on this, and so many hold the intellectual conceit that somehow we are specially damned, or particularly racist (or for that matter, the conceit that racism is the special province of Americans, or any particular race). I have a problem with the people who seem to think that in America today, they live in Alabama in 1935. Having lived all over the world, I can assure you, America is nearly the LEAST racist country... and certainly it is the nation where racism is the least socially acceptable, and carries the most shame and stigma. Other countries are very pious in their proclamation of non-racism... but when you live there, or spend a lot of time there... its hysterical. The problem is that their racism is such a cultural default, its so subconscious... they literally do not know they are racist.
