Heres a reason mental illness sucks: My mom, who did well while I was in Scotland, is now trying to kill herself by not eating, drinking or taking her medication. Shes in a new mental hospital, too- its the worst level of care around here. Of the SIX shes been in during the 2 past years, this is historically the worst for her. Yesterday she told me I want to die. She wont talk to me, and she was refusing to see me, after not seeing me for six months. While all of this is going on, we moved continents and Im finishing off my major project for a Masters degree, which is due in two parts this week and next. There is little help for her, other than nurses who switch shifts and try to get her to eat. She hardly sees her doctor. Mental health care is an absolute joke, and Im sharing this because its important people know this kind of thing goes on in some peoples lives every single day. If someone broke their leg, wed post a picture of a cast and all commiserate. If someone gets cancer they get a fundraising benefit and loads of press. But if someone is slowly wasting away in their own head and in actuality, in what is essentially a jail, no one says or does a freaking thing. Where is the dignity in that? Well, back to my essay.
