I have recently bought the latest book by Pam Ayres which came out last year and is entitled You Made Me Late Again ! My New Collection . Pam lives with her husband in Gloucestershire ( after growing up in Berkshire ). They have a smallholding with cattle, sheep, bees, chickens and guinea fowl and so this latest collection of poems, anecdotes and sketches include life with her animals and some of the poems are spoken by her animals. Pam started out by writing short poems at school but later started performing her verses and songs around folk clubs in the 1970s. Unbeknown to her at the time other soon-to-be well known comedians and singers were doing the same, people like Billy Connolly, Jasper Carrott, Mike Harding and Max Boyce. She went on to win the TV talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1975 and is still performing today on BBC Radio 4 and many TV shows including The One Show, Gardeners World, The Alan Titchmarsh Show and also Countdown, she also tours around the world. I thoroughly recommend this book as she still makes me laugh with her funny poems and reading them I find I do so in her voice and see her with her cheeky smile as always. I am just going to write a few very short poems to end with which I hope you will enjoy and smile at if not actually laugh at: A Patients Prayer: O Lord I pray on bended knee, Defend me in the A & E, So if a bed costs too much lolly, Grant at least a porters trolley. The Bungled Bid: I bid for a buggy on eBay, The bidding was frantic and tense, Its mine and its nice, But at four times the price, I wish Id had more buggy sense. A Friendship Cake: A man gave me a friendship cake, Id never met the fella, We served it up for Sunday tea, And all got salmonella. The Wrong Thing: I like to wear The Wrong Thing It gives the guests a smile, Ive always gone with The Wrong Thing on, And stuck out half a mile. Watching The Boat Race: What a boat race! What a crew ! It made me find my old canoe, And, every sinew going crack! Row up the old duck pond and back. These are just a few of the very short poems but the longer ones are just as comical. The book is enhanced with some comedic drawings by Susan Hellard to accompany some of the poems. I hope you have enjoyed these few short poems and would like to read more.
