I have returned from one of the greatest adventures of my life; I hiked from the southern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail at Campo on the Mexico/US border to Hwy 36 near Mt. Lassen, 1,335 miles. My trip took me through the deserts in the south through the fire-ravaged mountains surrounding the Los Angeles basin north through the entire Sierra Nevada to the southern edge of the Cascades. There is no simple way of describing an experience of this magnatude except to say that it was as tough as anything Ive ever done and as beautiful as anything Ive ever seen. My trip was made possible by my cousin and business partner Jill, who ran the pickle business in my absence (and, oh by the way, ran the business up about 30%) and looked after my re-supplies and so many other things, my cousins Debby and Jim who looked after my dog, Lila, my cousins Dan and Elise who helped in more ways than I can count, my dear friend Ellen who looked after (and re-decorated) my house, my dear friends Art and Cindy Bailey (now, official trail angels), who met me in far corners of the trail to help me re-supply and provided companionship at just the right times. Many others contributed to this trip in ways to numerous to count, including those who took me into their houses, let me wash up and get my clothes clean and fed me. Trail Angels like Jack and Carolyn in Rancho Mirage, Ziggy and The Bear in Whitewater, the Saufleys in Agua Dulce, Bob and Jeanine in Truckee, Art and Cindy in Lake Tahoe who all gave me refuge when it was most needed, remind me of how good human kind can be. In the coming weeks, Ill post some pictures and tales of the trail. Meanwhile, its good to be back and to know that I have such loving friends.
