I have seen “The Producers” three times on Broadway with Nathan Lane/Matthew Broderick (2001), Lewis Stadlen/Don Stephenson (2003), and Richard Kind/Alan Ruck (2005). I did the whole wake-up-at-the-ass-crack-of-dawn-ride-into-the-city-wait-in-line-on-the-freezing-streets-of-NYC-for-rush-tickets. I even got the colorful souvenir program, the 1967 movie starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, the PBS special of “Recording The Producers: A Musical Romp with Mel Brooks,” the 2005 movie, and the 2001 Original Broadway Cast Recording and the 2005 movie soundtracks. The funny thing is I’m not a huge musical theater fan or a die-hard Producers fan and I hardly ever see a Broadway show more than once. Don’t get me wrong, the show is a blast and the music is catchy. But “The Producers” meant something else to me. There was an article about Doris and her final hours as the Club manager at Windows on the World. That morning she had tickets to “The Producers” (which was impossible to get back then) to pass on to a Club member who came in every Tuesday. And that was what she did: took care of her Club members by going above and beyond just like a hospitality professional. So in November 2001 (one month after that day), I stood in line at 5AM on the chilly streets of NYC with my best friend, Naomi Leight-Giveon, to see “The Producers” in memory of my cousin, Doris Eng, because those tickets meant so much to her and her job that particular morning. And also to support the Broadway community. Thank you for the memories and stories that you told me, Jenny Lau and Peggy Lau to scare us so we would be on better behavior. Thank you for being the older sister we never had. Thank you for doing everything in your power to try to direct the 170 people thru the smoke-filled restaurant to safety. Thank you for being brave on this day 13 years ago. Sending lots of loves, hugs, and kisses from down here up to you. We miss you very very much.
