I have some TRULY crappy news to share-but if by sharing it-people spay/neuter their pets EARLY in life...some tragedies can be avoided. I hope when youre done reading this, you will SHARE THIS POST. This AM, we got numerous pets of our homeless folks into the clinic. And then...the phone rang not long ago. The DVM opened one of the dogs up for her spay, and found her riddled with OVARIAN CANCER. Its metastasized far beyond her ovaries, and is inoperable. (THIS IS A 4.5 YEAR OLD DOG!) No one can possibly know how much I am dreading having to tell someone who has ONLY their pet in their life this afternoon-that hes going to lose his precious girl soon---to cancer----and that all we will be able to provide----as her condition worsens---is palliative care. You may remember a couple of homeless guys who found an injured sharp-shinned hawk not long ago, deep in the Mojave River Basin. This-is one of those guys-who sat there freezing his butt off, sitting with that hawk, to protect her from predators, until I could get out there. And now---this. Heartbroken. :(
