I have spent considerable time in recent weeks in Muncie and have had the opportunity to drive extensively throughout much of the city (I enjoy seeing all that is going on). However - and I dont believe this is much of an exaggeration to say this - I could make a case that virtually every street in Muncie is in bad need of repaving. Most of the major thoroughfares are passable but they too are crumbling in many areas. The side streets and neighborhood streets are deplorable! As bad, and likely worse, than anyplace Ive seen in my travels. The Village is a disaster area from a street perspective. More than once I was struck by the thought of this tremendous $60 million dollar development going on, which Im sure will be beautiful when its all done, but will be surrounded by third world country street conditions. Im not exaggerating. If you dont believe me, spend a couple of hours driving around Muncie. Get off the main arteries and onto the secondary streets. Its an embarrassment! I raise this issue here because the ONLY way I know of to fix this deplorable condition - a condition that doesnt put Muncie in a great light when companies consider locating in Muncie - is through additional revenue (taxes). The City has done right by the many people whose tires have been damaged by the numerous craters that exist but that cant continue indefinitely. Ive not seen anything in TSP reported on what is being done to correct this, only reports of how bad things are. This problem goes WAY beyond patching! This is a crisis that needs addressed and the only way to do it is with tax dollars. Not a popular topic to be sure but the streets are only going to get worse if nothing is done. Can you live with that?
