I have the utmost respect for musicians who, due to having families, were unable to follow their dream. They did the right thing. They put their family first and stayed home where they had the security of a regular paycheck. When people ask me how I always got these great jobs with major acts-- my reply was--- I just took them. I have always been a chance taker, never paying attention to the uncertainty. Luckily for me, I was always in the right place at the right time, and always had the freedom to chase that dream. I was always up front with my employers--telling them that i was a musician first, and as long as they understood that I was a musician first, and if a pickin job came along, I was gone. If they didnt understand this, dont hire me. I only had 1 employer in all my years that didnt believe me. He is now a believer. I wrote a poem about this choice that musicians are confronted with. I recited this poem to Cole Vosbury when he was about 15 years old. Im glad to see he was paying attention. Hes on his way now. For those who cling to the trunk of the tree, --- thats where youll find stability , but rewards await for those who chance cause the fruit and nuts are on the branch.
