I have this fun connection to the Turkey Vultures. I absolutely LOVE them. “The Latin name of the Turkey Vulture is Cathartes aura, which means “Golden Purifier” or “Purifying Breeze”. You can call to them in the sky and they will come and do acrobatics and acknowledge you acknowledging them. Their wingspan can be 6 feet!!! They do not kill things to eat, they eat the dead. If they have more food than they can attend to, they will call others. They share. They do not attack. In fact theyre defense system is to throw up on themselves so as to make themselves unattractive to a predator. Turkey vultures are often guilty only by association because they sometimes mix with groups of black vultures, scavenging what the black vultures leave behind. I just love them and it is my daydream to make friends with one some day. Not to train him to do tricks just to have a bond of trust and a familiarity like were slowly cultivating with the bears here. I still panic when Im face to face with the bear but the reaction is slowing down, Im pretty sure in the next year or two it will be gone and I will be able to remain fully calm and present in their presence. I really love living here its helping me rewire mt nervous system in ways I never would have been able to in the big city!
