I have two wifi networks in my condo and finally got around to measuring their speed using speedtest.net. I was surprised by what I found. One network is supplied by Comcast. The 2.4 GHz wifi router is built into the cable modem, as is often the case nowadays. The second network is a 5 GHz Apple Airport Time Capsule thats connected to the Comcast modem with an Ethernet cable. I did not expect much difference. Heres what I found. I ran three trials of each, alternating networks. Router Ping ms D/L Mbps U/L Mbps ====== ======= ======== ======== Comcast 119 9.9 6.1 15 8.7 4.4 19 17.7 6.1 Apple 16 30.1 6.2 15 29.3 6.2 16 27.7 6.2 Im using Safari and Yosemite on a 2013 MacBook Air. No other apps or tabs were open. I found similar differences when I used Chrome. What are some reasons the Apple router might be so much faster, especially its D/L throughput? I had expected little difference since the cable modem ought to be the bottleneck. My theory for now is that the Comcast router is competing for 2.4 GHz spectrum with my dozen or so neighbors, all of whom are running Comcast routers.
