I havent formed an opinion on this issue yet. I have two questions. One is about cost to society. We need to understand who is having babies and their potential for supporting them. I would like to know the demographics of childbirth in the US. With few exceptions, having a child is a decision, not an accident. If you cant afford to take off work to have children, then you shouldnt have children. If you cant afford to raise children, you should not expect me to pay for them. The other consideration is the benefit to society. I dont support eugenics per se, but I dont believe that we should reward people who make the least contribution to our society due to low intelligence, inclination toward crime, laziness, mental unfitness or antisocial behavior by subsidizing the multiplication of their DNA. In a nutshell, those who cost our society should not be permitted to increase their debt to society by multiplying. The crux of this line of thinking is determining who makes those decisions and upon what criteria. There are many moral and ethical issues. I do support unpaid maternity and paternity leave. I dont support having to pay for irresponsible parents who are good at reproducing, but poor at parenting or those whom we are already supporting with tax dollars who will raise up children to propagate the dependency.
