I havent seen the recently released movie about the life of Cesar - TopicsExpress

I havent seen the recently released movie about the life of Cesar Chavez. I probably wont, mainly because Im not a fan of Hollywood propaganda. But anyone who is interested in this man should probably familiarize themselves with his history before buying into the Hollywood version of his life. (Thats assuming that the version isnt accurate. It may be. But I suspect it wont be, knowing Hollywood.) No matter where you stand on immigration, legal or other wise, you will find the attached article interesting. I happen to believe that no one should enter this country unless they enter legally. I also believe that the Bracero program that was in effect from 1942 until 1964 and provided legal work visas for farm workers was a good program. Cheap labor benefited the laborers who needed the income and it provided fruit and produce at a reasonable price for the rest of us. So, whats my point? My point is that many Hispanics and others on the left think that Cesar Chavez was a champion of the farm worker. Well, he was, as long as that farm worker belonged to his union, i.e., the United Farm Workers Union. To assure that they did, he worked against and was a driving force in destroying the Bracero program. He also wasnt averse to violence and on at least one occasion had his goons beat up Mexican nationals who attempted to cross the southern border. Furthermore, he and his union were very active in turning illegals in to the authorities and having them deported. As I said, Im all for deporting illegal aliens. They shouldnt be here. But, Im also in favor of re-instituting something along the lines of the Bracero program. Starving Mexicans arent worried about unions. They want to feed their families. Why not issue work visas so they can work at the backbreaking jobs that only they seem to have the will and stamina to work at? Why not use this labor pool and lower our food prices. Why not? Ill tell you why not. Because the Farm Workers Union isnt interested in lowering food prices and theyre sure as hell not interested in the Mexican worker who would jump at the chance to come here, legally, during the growing season in order to make a living and harvest the crops. Its all about the Union. Chavez, the ICON of those who dont know any better, was all about the Union as well. Maybe they should change Cesar Chavez St.,in San Francisco, back to Army St. Maybe they will when the Latinos, who live in the Mission District, a district that the street traverses, realize that he wasnt what they all perceived him to be.
