I hear from people, often single Moms, on a daily basis who are struggling to make ends meet. Occasionally Habitat is able to serve their housing needs, but more often they do not meet the criteria. It is difficult to hear their stories and know that I am yet another no in their lives. This is why it is so important to me to dignify every single person. Your life, my life: filled with unexpected detours, yes, but at least we have a map (or more likely a GPS). There truly are people in this world navigating without a single resource to get them from Point A to Point B. Is it their responsibility to figure it out/get their shit together? As much as its possible to hand a novice a violin and ask her to play Mozart. People are complex; there is no simple equation to plug in and get the results we want for them. Instead, we are called to invest in people - all of them - not to get results, but to get good with the reality that we are equal. Some of us are just fortunate enough to have shiny devices to guide our way.
