I heard on the radio the other day that violence against women is the leading cause of death for women between the ages of 18 and 34 in the U.S. I dont know how accurate that is but I do know its not just the U.S. This fact and violence against women in every form is a shame that every man on the planet shares. Why do I feel shame when I have never raped a woman? The answer is in the numbers. Our society does not allow such travesty to occur without the complacence of the men who witness such behaviour, in any way, without strongly and physically, if necessary, doing everything we can to stop it. Every man must speak up when faced with behaviour, jokes, or speech which allows this culture to continue. We have all heard it, in locker rooms, in school, even in our homes. The kind of attitude that, when taken further, results in these horrific stats. I have taught many of my young family members basic self-defence. I have tried to do so with my ex and my daughters. Alas, twas not to be. As it turns out, in this particular matter, the ladies of my household are more evolved than I. The quite simply, do not possess the aggression or the capability of imagining their ever being able to physically cause harm to anyone. Its not a question of intensity or focus, they have that in droves. They simply dont want to practice to cause harm, even in defence. They did not grow up in an environment where they were ever exposed to physical violence in our household, not by anyone, especially me. Their total lack of interest in the martial arts has always been a great worry for me but I cannot do anything but support what I have to admit is a more evolved attitude, even if it scares the hell of a more road weary dad. I do, however, try to convey to any male friends of the gals, that they probably wouldnt want to anyway. Dad isnt anywhere near as evolved in this manner and am able to act very quickly to defend them if needed. It never has been. Men need to completely change their way of thinking in regards to women, children, and life in general. We live in a world where physical strength and violence is the way to gain our objectives. Our politics alone clearly support that poisoned attitude. It seeps its ugly way into every aspect of our lives and sows the seeds for rape and murder. The attitude to possess everything, including people, and preferring to destroy everything if we cant have it for ourselves, must end. Until it does, all men will continue to carry this shame.
