I highly recommend the attached article to anyone with a pulse. Apart from possibly a few captains of industry and the handful of people who consider FOX News a real news source, globally, I believe most are beginning to understand that Climate Change is real. I particularly like this article for two reasons. Initially, it expresses the reality that the notion of Sustainability or Economic Prosperity is a false choice. Second, it gives insight into the critical role embodied by world leaders on this topic. Specifically, it quotes remarks from representatives of: Australia, the USA and the UK on a topic they apparently deem to be taboo - Climate Compensation. I can guarantee that if you read their statements, it will lend insight into just how lacking the leadership of some of the worlds industrialised nations is, on this matter of global significance. This discussion is critical for Belize, because once the industrialised nations are made to pay their dues in terms of CO2 emissions, it can very well signal a viable and deserved source of revenue through which Belize can continue on the path of sustainable development. That, of course, comes with a local dynamic which involves the fundamental elements of: corruption, political will and in short - leadership. Hopefully, we will have our ship in order, on that level, by the time a new climate agreement is signed in 2015. The article highlighted a quote by former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan which read, “If governments are unwilling to lead when leadership is required, people must. We need a global grass-roots movement that tackles climate change and its fallout…” I agree with the sentiment expressed and it is within this context, that I believe Belize can prove a world leader!
