I hope everyone is having a good start to the week and staying warm, safe, and dry if you are in stormy weather! Here is my next question: Is there an institution that has been integral to helping you reach your career goals? Several institutions have played major roles in my career path. The first place I was able to fully immerse myself in studying marine science was at Shoals Marine Laboratory, where I spent several summers during my time at Cornell University. I learned so much about the ocean and about how to conduct research underwater, and I met people that have continued to be great friends and mentors. Studying abroad at James Cook University gave me the chance to visit entirely different marine ecosystems, and see the Great Barrier Reef, which I’d dreamed about visiting since my first time underwater. UCLA has given me so many opportunities, both as a graduate student and as a Lecturer. I did most of my graduate research at the Wrigley Marine Science Center on beautiful Santa Catalina Island and just recently returned from teaching a class there with UCLA. Marine labs are some of my favorite places in the world, not only because of their amazing locations, but because of the community of scientists that gather together, share ideas and create collaborations. Here are the two marine labs where Ive spent the most time, SML & WMSC, they will each always hold a special place in my heart!
