I hope my Irish.and British descended Muslim folks who celebrate Halloween dont think Im hating on them or their festivities. I just dont understand why Muslims Americans (non-Celtic) who have no cultural connection to the practice would celebrate. Maybe their friends or neighbors invite them? I dont want to judge-- but I worry much of the recent desire of some Muslims to embrace Halloween flows from a despiration to be cool and accepted in society. And thats when I bring out my iconoclastic hammer and break stuff. DECLARE YOUR CULTURAL INDEPENDENCE, darn it! My parents generation-- the people of Muhammad Ali (who is Irish by the way) fought so hard to open the space so their little Black and Muslim kids could be DIFFERENT, free and proud. Phrases like, Halloween Mubarak and Halaloween to me sound so utterly desperate. Forgive me for my hyperbole, but it even sounds treasonous, in a culturally sabotaging way. Dont you want to do your own thing? But I acknowledge your thing might not be my thing. And cultural space must be negotiated. But LAWD HAMMERCY! I dont know if my blood pressure can handle yall Muslim Americans today. I think I need to go lay down.
