I hope you dont think this is too off topic.. Its about processed Sodium Chloride AKA table salt. Here is an amazing new study in the journal Nature (Kleinewietfeld, et al. (2013). Nature 496, 518–522.) about processed food that was so fascinating that I just had to share it with you… A team of scientists from Yale University and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, in Germany, have scientifically shown that the sodium in processed foods is a STRONG trigger of autoimmune disease. Obviously, this hit home with me since I have had an autoimmune disease myself. And so do hundreds of millions of others who are suffering with Hashimotos (thyroid), multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, type 1 diabetes, and more. In fact, AI disorders have increased sharply in the last 50 years and now were discovering more reasons why. And get this, according to the study, US fast foods contain more than TWICE the immune-crushing sodium as those same processed foods in other countries! (NOTE: Want to know whats the #1 source of refined salt consumption in the US? BREAD! Yup. Just another reason to drop the wheat from your diet.) This present study looked at the role of T helper cells in the body. These cells activate and ‘help’ other cells to fight dangerous pathogens such as bacteria or viruses and battle infections. Our SNA students will know that a subset of these cells – known as Th17 cells – also play an important role in the development of autoimmune diseases. The Yale researchers discovered that exposing these cells in a lab to a table salt solution made them act more ‘aggressively.’ They found that mice fed a diet high in refined salts saw a dramatic increase in the number of Th17 cells in their nervous systems that promoted inflammation. They were also more likely to develop a severe form of a disease associated with multiple sclerosis in humans. The scientists then conducted a closer examination of these effects at a molecular level and revealed that sodium exposure increased the levels of inflammatory cytokines released by Th17 cells 10 times more than usual. More inflammation = more health problems! Now, we have proof that processed foods are not only disgusting but also deadly to our health. And thats the just the sodium content. Just imagine all the other garbage they contain. And just in case youre wondering, REAL salt like sea salt, kosher salt, himalayan salt, etc… are fine. They contain loads of important trace minerals and dont create the same nasty effects in your body.
