I just LOVE this story! I think that orphans in America (or everywhere really) are the kind of thing that people tend to just accept as an unfair part of life that we can’t really do anything about. There are so many of them, and the problem just seems too big for any of us to fix. I always figured that, if the problem had a face and, if, instead of hearing statistics about how many orphans in this country are looking for homes, people could see just one orphan whose world they could change, maybe things would be different. This brave kid did just that! He gave orphans a face and it worked! All it took is one kid who was willing to stand in front of a congregation and ask for something that all of the rest of us take for granted, “someone to love me until I die”, and 10,000 people around the country stepped up. 10,000 families! I encourage you to think about whether or not you would be one of those 10,000 families if this teen was standing in front of your family on Sunday morning. There are thousands of teenagers just like him who are running out of time and looking at spending the rest of their lives with no family. Try to imagine what your 18th birthday would feel like if it was the day that you finally knew for sure that the family you’d been dreaming about was never going to come for you. Almost 1500 teens aged out of foster care last year in Texas alone. We don’t need one family to take on 1500. We just need 1500 to consider taking on one. “I never look at the masses as my responsibility; I look at the individual. I can only love one person at a time-just one, one, one. So you begin. Maybe if I didn’t pick up that one person, I wouldn’t have picked up forth-two thousand…The same thing goes for you, the same thing in your family, the same thing in your church, your community.
