I just completed writing of a book on the new core standards. I - TopicsExpress

I just completed writing of a book on the new core standards. I only focused on K-5 music, and wrote just one lesson plan for each grade for each Process (creating, performing, responding). Obviously, I cant give away the whole book, but Im happy to share the process Im using to tackle the standards. Since I am not happy with the direction the standards took, my thinking was to adapt, incorporate, but minimize the disruption to my teaching. Thats why I went with just one lesson for each Process. Since they wrote them as processes, this really does work. Mind you, its a chock-full lesson that will incorporate much of the school year and many different activities, especially the Performance strand. But it allowed me to write down in one spot what I wanted to accomplish with that grade. I also tried to make my lessons more compact and readable than the Model Cornerstone Assessments that NAfME is working on. I think those have lots of valuable information and ideas, but they dont provide clear directions for struggling teachers. Ill try to post a sample lesson or two in the google drive in the near future. Now that Im finished (the book should be in print within a month, hopefully), I hope to contribute again more to this group!
