I just got home from the free screening of Cuban Fury tonight. The movie stars Nick Frost as a former child Salsa dance champion who, after a major tragedy, gives up the shoes and becomes, after 25 years, a shlubby engineer in a dead end office job. I went into this with low expectations. I wasnt a fan of the trailer and it looked kind of amusing at best. What I got was a surprisingly entertaining, though very light, dance comedy with Frost as a very likeable, easy-to-cheer-for hero. The whole cast was great in fact. Rashida Jones as the new American boss and office crush is perfectly awkward and cute. Chris ODowd is an f-ing bastard in this. I hated him! Ian Mcshane as the dance version of Mr. Miyagi is at his crusty, curmudgeonly best. Maybe its the underdog story of the dumpy guy who wins the cute girl not because hes remade his physical self, but because hes found his heart and his passion and with it his confidence, but I got all gooey in the final act. If youre not cheering for Frost by the end you have no soul. BTW, after the show, there was a Q&A session and Nick Frost was in attendance. He took some questions from the moderator and some questions from the audience and was his usual affable self. The moderator had printed out a bunch of fanart of the Cornetto Trilogy to give to Nick during the Q&A and when he found out I had drawn a quick Frost zombie from Shaun of the Dead before I got to the theater, he had me come up and present it to him. IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY! Soooo nervous, I just shook his hand, said hi and bye. OMG! I just met Nick Frost! I JUST MET NICK FROST & SHOOK HIS HAND! Such a doofus! :P Anyway, go see Cuban Fury. It was way better than I had feared. Its not close to the Cornetto Trilogy films, but I dont think it was aiming for that. Theres still that striving to add heart to the humor in the story (which he talked about a bit in the Q&A). Definitely a great feel-good film.
