I just had one of the greatest experiences of my life. And its still happening. A lot of today was divided between working on book edits and dealing with some massive shoulder/neck pain. Because of the latter, the edits were going slow, so I was feeling a bit frustrated as well. After dinner at the house, I was anxious to get some pain meds and then get back to work—then my son came into the room with a notebook and asked for a drawing lesson to design a new comic book character he created which wed been discussing earlier. We went through it fairly quickly, then I got up to leave, to get back to work—and he stayed on the couch, trying to make the drawing work. I sat back down and we worked on it for another twenty minutes, while my head and shoulder throbbed, and the unfinished book burned the back of my brain. Im glad I stayed. After I left and got my meds and some groceries, I came back to the Studio and I responded to a text message someone left this afternoon. That turned into trading several emails with the family of a girl who is in the hospital with a massive infection thats killing her. A staph infection thats done too much damage to reverse. She was sad that she probably wouldnt get to read the last three Imaginarium Geographica books, and wouldnt get to know how it all ends. They thought to write to me because of my post earlier today where I quoted Steven Moffatt, because theyre also Doctor Who fans, and thought I might be willing to send her a small note to cheer her up. I offered to send her the three books she was missing, so shed know how the series ends—and her family said she wasnt going to live long enough to even get the books. I ended up reading the epilogue to Book Seven to her over the phone, and answering her questions, and telling her secrets about the books no one else knows, and then telling her that she was now officially an Apprentice Caretaker of the Secrets of the Imaginarium Geographica, and that also entitled her to one magic wish. And she said, I dont want to die tonight. I told her some things that are only for her, and her alone to know. Her family said she was not expected to make it to morning, so theyre all there, waiting. I am broadcasting all the Signal I have in me into the universe to ask for her to have just a couple more hours, because at midnight, she gets to become a Dragon. I promised. Oh, please...Just two hours. Just two. Such an awesome, brave kid. My heart is breaking, my heart is full. Im here working on my revisions, and checking on her every hour, and manifesting an Impossible Signal. Ive told people I needed to hear it that I loved them, and will tell more. I am finishing a great work, which is just overflowing with Signal, now; and tomorrow Im going to spend as much time drawing with Nathaniel as he needs. Dream good dreams tonight, of new young Dragons. She only needs two hours.
