I just heard a Californian say that they felt sheltered by the acceptance of diversity in their society. Considering that most people using the sheltered label use it in the context of being sheltered FROM diversity, I found this very fascinating. It is mind opening to think that there are now pockets of culture that are so progressive, that they are sheltered from rigid norms, and can experience culture shock when confronted with a lack of diversity and acceptance. I suppose when comparing America to Saudi Arabia, this might occur, but I havent thought of it in the context of comparing San Francisco to Oklahoma City for example. I guess people on the west coast are technically sheltered from mid-American norms.
