I just noticed in the Univ of Montana weekly online newsletter that the universitys school of Music, Theatre and Art won first place nationally in the National Opera Associations annual competition for their production of The Legend of Orpheus. The UM won first place national awards for opera productions in 2006 and 2013 also. This is really big stuff, and quite an accolade, equivalent in my mind to winning the FCS national championship in football (as the Griz have done twice). But, why havent we read about it in the Montana press? I dont remember even seeing it promoted by the Montana University Systems Facebook site Maybe I am too soon with my criticism, but so often university achievements, by students and faculty, go unnoticed by the state media. Its frustrating. In terms of state support, our universities (plural) are much better than the state deserves, and we should at least show gratitude for the many ways in which they earn national and international recognition for excellence.
