I just powered up my computer and Facebook notified me that its your birthday today. But youre no longer here with us. I could make up a laundry list of things to rant about but not right this minute. Old friend and classmate, I hear your voice...soft and gentle like summer rain. You were a personification of the word gentle. We were in the French Club together. Sure as the morning is young, I never knew a gentleman like you. All of those five years at school, your countenance was like a picture in a frame...never changed, never altered, always stayed the same. I never saw you angry, never heard you raise your voice.Even when you spoke to me about your illness on the plane, you could still afford that lazy smile. This was in January 2011. Three months later in March, I was told you had passed on. I hadnt seen you in decades but meeting you again in 2010/2011, it seemed the years had not touched you at all. Your countenance was the same. You carried yourself with dignity. Your words spoke truth and honesty. You talked about your family and I could sense your utmost love for them. I could also see your absolute dedication to our alma mater beyond what words can say. Your emails to me from Nigeria were strictly about ICC concerns, no in-betweens. Thus on this day, I remember you Val. I celebrate your birthday in Heaven. I ponder on the light that you brought into the lives of all those whose paths you crossed. When you died, a little bit of us died with you. And its not just because you died, its because you lived. The world was a better place because you were in it. Rest in peace Valentine Izevbigie, Class of 1980.
