I keep seeing people posting that the reason behind the Ice Bucket challenge is because one of the effects of the disease is numbness throughout the body. ALS attacks only motor neurons (those that control voluntary muscular movement) therefore the sense of touch is preserved, along with sight hearing, taste and smell. The real symptoms are muscle weakness (especially in the hands and feet), twitching and cramping, thick speech, difficulty projecting the voice and (in more advanced stages) shortness of breath and difficulty breathing/swallowing. Please research this disease for yourself before mindlessly reblogging and/or pouring water over yourself. THAT is the point of the Ice Bucket Challenge. #strikeoutals alsa.org
