I keep seeing this ad, and Im starting to see articles posted about it. Its utter bullshit, and heres why: I get the point theyre trying to make, but this commercial does a piss poor job of conveying it. Forget for a moment that the kid is a girl. Take gender out of it completely. A kid wearing clean clothes is told not to get dirty. A kid making a mess with their art project is told to clean it up. A young kid using power tools is told to defer to the older kid. If any of those scenes had been a male child, nobody would bat an eyelash. Im in no way saying that girls arent discouraged in todays society from male dominated professions, but this commercial could have been thought out better. The title of this article is misleading, too. Telling little girls that they are pretty isnt the problem. Nothing that builds a childs confidence is bad. The message should be encourage your child in every way and help them discover who they are. Nurture their interests, regardless of whether or not they adhere to traditional gender roles. But thats just my two cents.
