I kinda have mixed feelings on this view. I learned recently that for something like 10,000 listens of a song on Pandora it equates to a few dollars royalty to the artist. Compared to record deals and massive album sales of the past that seems like a large downgrade. But more artists still are approaching to launch their music here. What would be the state of thing is no one renewed their contracts with pandora. If they said enough Internet radio, were done and only put out albums? Sure there would still be pirates (there is always pirates) but would things get better for them? I mean, you cant beat the mass level of distribution you have at your fingertips they provide. Radio is so limited but Ive heard dozens of bands online I gladly buy music from that Ive never heard before. As to the recording industry grooming stock artists and putting them out I have no real strong feeling towards that. Its no different than anything else, the rich singer will always have more opportunities than the kids in the garage. The landscape was never on their side in my view. It just seems to me that now with a little added tech knowledge they could level the playing field and start distributing digitally without need of a label...oh wait... they do.
